Throughout history, spectators and fans have been an integral part of sports competitions. However, with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, unprecedented measures were taken, and for the first time in the history of the Tokyo Olympic Games, spectators were prohibited from attending. Even after a one-year postponement of the games, the restrictions remained in place. Despite efforts to use communication technology to infuse vibrancy into the event for both athletes and viewers, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games felt remarkably subdued to those who had witnessed previous editions bustling with enthusiastic spectators.
